"I'll Be There for You", performed by The Rembrandts, is the theme song to the hit American sitcom Friends which began airing in 1994. Although The Rembrandts write most of their own songs, this one was written specifically for the show by Michael Skloff and Allee Willis.
After a Tennessee disc jockey looped the short song into a full-length track and played it on the air, it became so popular that they had to record it. "Our record label said we had to finish the song and record it. There was no way to get out of it," lead singer Phil Sōlem said, in an AP wire story widely quoted at the time of the final episode of the show.
The song was almost not included on the album LP that The Rembrandts released a year later in 1995, but the decision was made at the last minute to add it. Originally the song was not released as a single, which was a common practice at the time by record companies who thought single sales would cannibalize album sales. This resulted in a eight week run at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay Chart. When the single was finally released, it made number two in the UK and reached number seventeen on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 as the flipside to the "This House is not a Home".
Though rarely heard on UK radio after its early popularity, the song was frequently played on UK pop radio in 2004 around the time of the end of Friends, demonstrating the popularity of the show and the magnitude of the song.

So no one told you life was gonna be this way
Your job's a joke
You're broke
Your lovelife's D.O.A.
It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year
CHORUS:
But I'll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I'll be there for you
(Like I've been there before)
I'll be there for you
('Cause you're there for me too)
You're still in bed at ten,
and work began at eight
You've burned your breakfast
So far, things are goin' great
Your mother warned you there'd be days like these
But she didn't tell you when the world has brought you down to your knees
that
(CHORUS)
No one could ever know me
No one could ever see me
Seems you're the only one who knows, what it's like to be me
Someone to face the day with
Make it through all the rest with
Someone I'll always laugh with
Even at my worst I'm best with you
It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year
(CHORUS)
I'll be there for you I'll be there for you
I'll be there for you...
('Cause you're there for me too)
